Bronx Dental understands that taking care of your teeth as you get older can become an added stress. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and stressful.
Before we share dental care tips for senior patients and their family members, a Washington Dental Service Foundation (WDSF) report states that 75% of adults ages 60 and older only have a portion of their original teeth.
Bronx Dental is here to help decrease that statistic, and help the New York community feel confident about their smile.
Gum disease is an example of an issue is common in 23 percent of seniors age 65-74. Why is this important? Gum disease is known to contribute to the loss of natural teeth. There is a risk for heart disease and diabetes if you develop poor oral health.
Colgate’s dental health care blog recommends the following four ways to maintain a bright smile as you get older.
- Keep using fluoride. It helps in protecting the surface of your teeth and helps prevents tooth decay.
- Drink plenty of water. Medications and chronic health conditions may cause an increase in dry mouth – which can lead to cavities or tooth decay. Staying hydrated will help.
- Dentures. The American College of Prosthodontists reports that more than 178 million people in the United States are missing at least one tooth, and tooth loss is more likely to occur in older people. Even if you have dentures, it’s vital to take care of your dentures just as caring for real teeth. Clean them on a daily basis with a toothbrush specific for dentures. Brush your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush to help remove any bacteria and food particles. Consult with your Bronx Dental dentist for more dental care tips.
- Gum disease. It doesn’t have to be the cost of getting older. Prevent gum disease by seeing your Bronx Dental dentist regularly and maintaining good oral health at home.
