An analysis of 2013–2016 data from various credible sources found that greater than 38% of children age 3–6 years old used more toothpaste than recommended by CDC and other professional dental organizations. In addition, nearly 80% of children aged 3–15 years started brushing later than recommended.

Here are a few things that you might want to know about your kids usage of toothpaste

• An analysis of 2013–2016 data from various credible sources found that greater than 38% of children age 3–6 years old used more toothpaste than recommended by CDC and other professional dental organizations.

• Nearly 80% of children aged 3–15 years started brushing later than recommended.

• Ingestion of too much fluoride during the development of teeth can result in visible changes in enamel structure such as discoloration.

• The CDC recommends that children begin using fluoride toothpaste at age 2.

• Children less than 3 years old should only use a smear of toothpaste, the size of a rice grain when brushing their teeth as teeth are still sensitive at this age.

• Children over 3 years old should use no more than a pea-sized amount (0.25 g) of toothpaste.

• Until the age of 6, children should use no more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. At this age, the swallowing reflex has developed more sufficiently to prevent inadvertent ingestion.

In conclusion, the CDC suggests parents and caregivers play a key role in ensuring that children are brushing often enough and using the recommended amount of toothpaste.
